Design Works Engineering's Halifax office, based in Dartmouth, delivers integrated structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering for clients building across the Halifax Regional Municipality and Atlantic Canada. We're licensed with Engineers Nova Scotia, fluent in the Nova Scotia Building Code Regulations and HRM's permitting process, and embedded in the local construction community — so your project is engineered by people who know the ground it sits on.

From early concept through occupancy, our Halifax team integrates every discipline your project needs — coordinated under one roof, signed and sealed by Nova Scotia-licensed engineers.

Structural Engineering

From wood-frame infill to mid-rise concrete and adaptive reuse of historic stock, our structural team designs efficient, code-compliant frames for HRM's full range of building types — including wind and exposure considerations common to coastal Atlantic projects. We work directly with architects and contractors from massing through shop drawings, sealed under Engineers Nova Scotia.

Mechanical Engineering

HVAC, plumbing, and process system design tuned to the Nova Scotia maritime climate and the NECB. Our Halifax mechanical engineers size heating, ventilation, and domestic water systems for cool damp winters, humid summers, salt exposure, and the energy-code requirements that come with them.

Electrical Engineering

Power distribution, life safety, and low-voltage systems for commercial, multi-family, and institutional projects across the Halifax Regional Municipality. CEC- and Nova Scotia-amendment-fluent.

Civil Engineering

Site grading, servicing, stormwater management, and onsite utility design for HRM developments. We coordinate with HRM servicing standards and Nova Scotia Power / Heritage Gas utility requirements so site approvals don't stall the project.

NECB-compliant whole-building energy modelling handled in-house. We use industry-standard tools to demonstrate code compliance, optimize envelope performance, and support LEED, Zero Carbon Building, and Efficiency Nova Scotia submittals for Halifax-area projects.

Building Assessment Reports

Reserve fund studies, due-diligence inspections, and condition assessments for HRM buildings. Backed by our purpose-built BAR platform for consistent, defensible reporting that lenders, insurers, and condominium boards accept.

Fire Protection

Sprinkler, standpipe, and special-hazard system design coordinated with our mechanical drawings. We engage Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service early to keep code interpretations clean and inspections on schedule.

Architectural and exterior lighting that meets ASHRAE 90.1 and NECB power-density limits while supporting the architect's intent. Photometrics, control sequences, and emergency lighting coordinated directly with the electrical set.
