Community isn't a side project.

Rooted in the places we work
Community has always been part of the job at Design Works Engineering. We've built careers in these cities, raised families in them, and watched them grow. That connection isn't a talking point — it's why we show up when no one's paying us to.
Pro bono engineering, full rigour
Some of our most useful work doesn't appear on an invoice. We've donated full engineering services to the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society, Oak Acres Children's Camp, and others — projects where a properly engineered structure isn't a luxury, it's what makes the facility function. These engagements get the same senior engineers, the same coordination, and the same attention as any paid project. Good engineering shouldn't be reserved for the biggest budgets.

Investing in local landmarks
A strong company makes its city stronger. Design Works Engineering is a founding sponsor of the Design Works Centre, a premier hockey facility in Kitchener-Waterloo that gives young athletes a place to train, compete, and grow. The connection to sport isn't incidental. Hockey, like engineering, rewards preparation, precision, and follow-through — and we're proud to put our name on a facility that reflects those values.
Connecting with the next cohort
The talent shortage in engineering won't fix itself. Our team engages regularly with schools, colleges, and universities — not to recruit, but to connect. We talk candidly about what a career in engineering actually looks like: the variety, the challenge, and the real responsibility you carry for work that affects public safety. Several of our current team members first encountered DWE through a campus visit or co-op placement. That pipeline matters — to us and to the industry.

Supporting internationally trained engineers
Canada's engineering workforce is stronger because people who trained elsewhere chose to build their careers here. We've made it a priority to connect with internationally trained professionals — offering mentorship, answering real questions about the licensing path, and opening our network to people still finding their footing. If you're new to the country or the industry, we want to be one of the first calls you make.
Where we're headed
We're proud of what we've contributed, but we're not finished. The plan is to expand our pro bono commitments, deepen relationships with schools and universities, and keep showing up for the communities that shaped this company. Engineering is, at its core, about improving people's lives. That work doesn't stop at the property line.
