JHS Ottawa
Project Description
The John Howard Society (JHS) has developed a six-storey, 40-unit supportive housing residence at 289 Carling Avenue in Ottawa. This mixed-use building serves as both the organization’s new administrative headquarters and a permanent supportive housing facility for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.
The building comprises 40 self-contained studio and one-bedroom apartments, eight of which are fully accessible. Residential units are located on the upper floors, while the lower levels house administrative offices, educational and training facilities, and communal amenity spaces. The design includes two outdoor terraces—one for residents and another for staff—providing accessible outdoor space within the urban setting.
Support services are integral to the residence, with 24/7 on-site staff and case managers providing assistance with medication management, mental health support, employment counseling, and life skills development. A nurse practitioner visits the facility weekly to address residents’ healthcare needs.
Design Works Engineering provided structural engineering services for this 28,500 ft² project, ensuring the building meets both functional and safety requirements.
The project received funding from various sources, including the National Housing Co-Investment Fund and the Rapid Housing Initiative, reflecting a collaborative effort to address affordable housing needs in Ottawa.
