253 King William Street
Project Description
Located at 253 King William Street in Hamilton, Ontario, this three-storey modular building comprises 24 studio apartments designed to provide deeply affordable, supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness. Commissioned by CityHousing Hamilton and designed by Montgomery Sisam Architects, the project emphasizes sustainability and efficiency. It has achieved Certified Passive House Classic designation, making it one of the few multi-residential buildings in Ontario to meet this standard.
The 18,000 ft² structure was constructed using modular methods, allowing for rapid delivery while maintaining high-quality standards. The building features all-electric heating and cooling systems, triple-glazed windows, and a super-insulated envelope. Photovoltaic panels on the south-facing roof contribute to its energy efficiency.
Interior spaces are designed to feel welcoming and non-institutional, incorporating warm materials like Douglas fir ceilings and wood-look vinyl flooring. Common areas include a multipurpose room for community gatherings. The surrounding landscape features a community garden and seating areas with low-maintenance plantings, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
