For Abdulrahman Serhal, the path into engineering started from a young age. In high school he gravitated toward physics and math, and that early preference steadily shaped his direction.  

“I like numbers,” he said simply. “That’s what got me into engineering.” 

He completed his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering in Lebanon in 2023, followed by a year working of consulting and contracting. In 2024 he relocated to Canada to begin his Master of Engineering at the University of Alberta, where he is on track to graduate in 2026. 

A curiosity in how systems come together is what ultimately led him to specialize in Mechanical Engineering. 

“I’ve always been interested in how things work,” Abdulrahman said. 

Starting with Design Works earlier this month as a Mechanical Designer, he’s already seeing what attracted him to the opportunity on a daily basis. 

“This firm is very fast-paced — you can learn a lot in a short period of time,” he said. 

And while he has experience working in residential, Abdulrahman says he’s eager to broaden his exposure further, including daycares and other types of projects.

He credits the team around him for taking him under their wing and being generous with their time.

“They have a lot of experience and they’re kind and willing to teach.”

When he’s not working, he keeps moving. He enjoys driving, regularly goes to the gym, and swims in his downtime.
