Building St. Josephine Bakhita Catholic School
A new chapter opens in West Edmonton.

This fall, students in Secord and Rosenthal will walk through the doors of a brand-new learning space: St. Josephine Bakhita Catholic Elementary/Junior High School.
The $40.2M project, led by Alberta Infrastructure with AMAN Builders as contractor and Kasian Architects as architect, is nearing completion and set to open in September 2025.
A Growing Community, A New School
Located in West Edmonton’s Secord neighbourhood, St. Josephine Bakhita will serve Kindergarten through Grade 9 students from both Secord and Rosenthal. The attendance boundary was shaped through community consultation, ensuring families could attend a school close to home while also allowing space for long-term growth in these fast-developing neighbourhoods.
Educational Vision
The new school will launch with regular programming across all elementary and junior high levels. Course offerings, timetables, and extracurriculars will be determined by school administration following student enrolment and staffing assignments — ensuring programs are tailored to the needs and interests of the first cohort of students.
Engineering Perspective
Design Works provided Civil, Mechanical, and Energy Modelling services on this project. As Gordon Hussell, Senior Mechanical Engineer, explains:
“Education works best when students and teachers collaborate and work together for the impartation of knowledge and its application in an ever-changing environment and world. The same collaboration is needed throughout the conceptual development and design of a school.”
That philosophy of collaboration guided the engineering and construction teams throughout the project. By aligning expertise across disciplines and working closely with stakeholders, the team created a vibrant, sustainable learning environment designed to support children for years to come.
Collaboration in Action
Projects like St. Josephine Bakhita showcase what’s possible when public infrastructure, architectural vision, and engineering expertise align. With input from the community, the leadership of Edmonton Catholic Schools, and the collaboration of multiple partners, this school will stand as both a learning space and a community anchor for years to come.
